The Allow tax override on line items setting in Appliance.io lets dealers manually choose whether eligible line items are taxable or non-taxable when creating or editing Quotes and Orders.
This account-level setting is available under Sales Tax Settings and is disabled by default. When it is disabled, standard line items continue to follow the existing sales tax behavior. Custom line items continue to support taxability selection regardless of this setting.
đ Accessing the Tax Override Setting
To get started, open the sidebar and click Settings.
Scroll down to Advanced Settings, select Accounting, then open the Sales Tax tab.
Locate the following setting:
Allow tax override on line items
Turn the setting on to display tax override controls for eligible standard line items.
Turn the setting off to hide the controls and use the existing sales tax behavior.
Changes to this setting are recorded in the Changelog.
âď¸ Overriding Taxability on a Quote
When the account-level setting is enabled, eligible line items on a Quote display a tax override control.
For each eligible item, select whether it should be:
Taxable
Non-taxable
Appliance.io uses the selected status when calculating sales tax for that line item. This makes it possible to address a specific tax situation without changing the underlying product configuration.
The tax override control is enabled by default whenever it is available.
đŚ Default Taxability for Built-In Appliances
The default taxable status of a built-in appliance follows the Built-in Appliance Tax setting:
If Built-in Appliance Tax is enabled, the line item defaults to taxable.
If Built-in Appliance Tax is disabled, the line item defaults to non-taxable.
When Allow tax override on line items is enabled, users can adjust the taxability of the individual built-in appliance line item as needed.
𧞠Tax-Exempt Customers
A customerâs tax-exempt status takes priority over individual line-item tax overrides.
When a customer is marked as tax exempt:
All line-item tax override controls are disabled.
Users cannot mark individual items as taxable.
The customer remains exempt from sales tax.
When a user points to the disabled control, a tooltip explains:
This item cannot be marked as taxable because the customer is marked as tax-exempt.
This applies whether or not the account-level tax override setting is enabled.
đ Tax Behavior for Related Charges
Changing a productâs taxable status can also affect related charges according to the existing tax rules.
Protection Plans
Protection plans remain taxable when the associated product is taxable.
Fulfillment Charges
Fulfillment charges remain taxable when both of the following are true:
The associated product is taxable.
Fulfillment service taxation is enabled.
Built-In Appliances
Built-in appliance taxation follows the taxable status selected for the individual line item.
These rules help keep the tax treatment of a product consistent with its related charges.
đ Tax Override on Orders
Tax override behavior also applies to Orders, based on the status of each line item.
After a Quote is converted into an Order:
Tax override controls are hidden for existing line items.
The taxability of existing line items cannot be changed.
Once a line item has been paid, its tax override control is hidden.
If a new line item is added to an existing Order, its taxability can be selected when Allow tax override on line items is enabled.
This prevents changes to finalized or paid items while allowing newly added items to be configured correctly.
đ Existing Quotes Keep Their Saved Taxability
Changing the account-level setting does not overwrite taxability values already saved on existing Quotes.
For example:
A Quote is created while tax override is enabled.
A line item is manually marked as non-taxable.
An administrator later disables Allow tax override on line items.
The existing Quote keeps the saved non-taxable value. Disabling the setting only controls whether standard line items can be overridden going forward. It does not retroactively change existing Quote data.
đ§ Tax Override Priority
Appliance.io determines taxability in the following order:
Customer Tax-Exempt Status
If the customer is tax exempt, all line-item override controls are disabled and the customer remains exempt from sales tax.
Account Tax Override Setting
If the customer is not tax exempt, Allow tax override on line items determines whether users can manually control eligible standard line items.
Line-Item Taxability
When tax override is available, Appliance.io uses the taxable or non-taxable status selected for that line item.
This hierarchy ensures that customer tax exemption always takes priority.
⨠Whatâs Changed?
Previous Behavior | Current Behavior |
Only custom line items could be manually marked taxable or non-taxable. | Eligible standard line items can also have their taxability overridden. |
Standard products followed the existing tax configuration. | Dealers can manually control individual standard items when the setting is enabled. |
No account-level control was available for this functionality. | Administrators can enable or disable the feature under Sales Tax Settings. |
Tax controls were not specifically restricted for tax-exempt customers. | Tax override controls are disabled for tax-exempt customers. |
Dealers needed workarounds for certain standard product tax scenarios. | Eligible items can be managed directly from a Quote or Order. |
â ď¸ Current Limitations
This feature provides manual control over line-item taxability. It does not determine whether an item should legally be taxable in a particular jurisdiction.
The feature does not provide:
Automatic state- or county-specific tax determination
A built-in tax rule engine
Automatic interpretation of local tax regulations
Advanced tax reporting
Automatic tax compliance recommendations
Dealers should confirm the appropriate tax treatment for their jurisdiction before overriding a line itemâs taxability.
đ Youâre All Set!
Once Allow tax override on line items is enabled, eligible standard line items can be marked as taxable or non-taxable directly on Quotes and supported Order items.
Remember:
The feature is disabled by default.
Custom line items continue to support taxability selection.
Tax-exempt customers always take priority over line-item overrides.
Saved taxability on existing Quotes is not changed when the account setting is updated.
Existing or paid Order items cannot be changed, but newly added items can use the override when the setting is enabled.
Protection plans and fulfillment charges continue to follow the existing tax rules for their associated product.
With this setting, dealers have more flexibility to handle item-specific tax situations while preserving established tax behavior and transaction safeguards.
